Christy Lynne Wood spent her teens and early twenties in a Christian cult known as the Institute in Basic Life Principles led by Bill Gothard ( rom Amazon Prime Video’s new documentary Shiny Happy People.) The teachings of the cult were characterized by legalism, twisted Scripture, and lies. But Jesus found her anyway. Getting to know the real Jesus changed everything.
A people pleaser and good girl by nature, Christy began to feel a strange rebellion creeping into her heart. She tells more of her story and questions lies that have crept into mainstream Christianity in her book, Religious Rebels.
Christy is an author, speaker, and podcaster who happens to teach fifth-grade math.
She loves flower gardens, camping, and finding beauty in old and broken things.
Christy lives in West Michigan with her wonderfully opposite husband and their two children.

Meet Christy Wood. Raised in rural Michigan, her early years consisted of a blend of rural charm and homeschooled education, grounded in an environment profoundly influenced by Bill Gothard’s teachings. Despite an initial approach to Christianity dictated by rigid rules, Christy experienced an overwhelming spiritual transformation in her adolescence through an authentic relationship with Jesus. This led her to reevaluate her faith, leading her on a journey of discovering the Jesus of Scripture. In her conversations, Christy’s hope is that her journey points others to Jesus who may be grappling with their faith after leaving a similar environment.
